Putting in the Time - part one

I wish saving money just came to us by osmosis. That companies would reward you for your loyalty by reducing your payments over time. That the best deal available was laid out in front of you in a clear way and you could simply choose. And while I'm at it, that money grew on trees – specifically in my backyard.
Like most things, getting the best bang for your buck requires time. And energy. Uck. It can feel really overwhelming. One more thing on the to-do list. Or more like 20 more things on the to-do list if you're really trying to maximize your budget. Instead of looking at that long list and then forgetting about it, start small.

One of the best places to save money is on your fixed monthly expenses. Things that get auto-deducted from your bank account that you normally don't give a second thought. The items that I audited (audited, what a fun and exciting word!) were my cell phone bill and auto/renters insurance.

With a couple simple emails and a meeting with our (new) insurance guy, my husband and I are now saving $20 a month. That was with adding a renter's policy and getting better coverage on our auto. $20 a month is $240 yearly. Sometimes you can start thinking, "$20 bucks a month, big whoop." But nipping and tucking your budget is where you'll keep your income in your pocket and not theirs.
